by S. C.

Dr. Selvam Daniel, Managing Director, ECOCERT India, an affiliate of the eponymous French global certification MNC, has said that India was well equipped to leverage the increasing opportunities in the global organic food industry. He was speaking on the sidelines of a convention on organic food at the Taj President in Mumbai.
Dr Daniel said the global organic food industry continues its unprecedented growth with sales expected to cross $ 100 billion by 2011 (US $46 billion in 2007, according to Organic Monitor).
“The complete food chain in India has been organic till a few decades ago,” said Dr Daniel. “Unlike the West, our forefathers have benefited immensely by being organic. If you talk to any Indian, he/ she would be happy to share a wealth of information on the endless gains of organic lifestyle. This applies to the producer, the processor and the consumer.”
ECOCERT is the trusted global name in certification of organic food, cosmetics and textiles.
Ms Kavita Mukhi, one of the pioneers of organic food in India, said the India consumer has been showing increasing preference for organic food with the inorganic options losing their price edge. “The discerning consumers are also realizing the benefits of organic food for self, family and Planet Earth. In this regard, organic food certification is assuming increasing importance in India and at the global level.”
