Three glasses of milk a day.

by S. C.

The second most-cited scientist in all of clinical medicine, Walther Willett, M.D., Ph.D., head of nutrition of Harvard’s School of Public Health, flies in the face of ‘up-to-date’ advice from the United States Department of Agriculture, which recommends drinking three glasses of milk a day.

Willett says this advice is not based however on strict scientific evidence.

According to the Nurses’ Health Study dairy products may increase risk of fracture by 50 percent. Vitamin D appears to be much more important than calcium in preventing fractures. Contrary to popular belief milk does not reduce fracture risk.

Countries such as Africa and Asia, which have a low rate of dairy and calcium consumption, also have the lowest rates of osteoporosis.

Research shows that larger intakes of both calcium and dairy products may increase a man’s risk of prostrate cancer by 30 to 50%. Higher intakes of dairy products increases the insulin-like growth factor, a known cancer promoter.

Because of a problem known as lactose intolerance, almost 75 percent of the world’s population is hereditarily unable to properly digest milk and other dairy products.
Apart from all that, it has been verified that milk does not seem to enhance sports’ performance.

Dairy products are clearly linked to heart disease, being full of saturated fat.

Most scientists concur it is healthier for us to obtain our calcium, potassium, protein and fats from other food sources, like whole plant foods, vegetables, fruits, beans, whole grains, nuts, seeds and seaweed. Dairy mammals (including human beings) stop producing the enzymes needed to properly digest and metabolize milk after they have been weaned. Scientific research reveals that our bodies were not created to process milk on a regular basis.

Try doing away with all dairy foods such as milk, cheese, yoghurt and ice cream, from your diet for two weeks and see if you feel better. There may be a remarkable improvement in headaches and sinuses, irritable bowel syndrome, energy and weight. Then introduce dairy food again and notice if there is any difference.
