Resveratrol, which is present in wine and red fruits, can help eyes against different diseases. As a matter of fact, this molecule seems to hinder the uncontrolled grow of damaged blood vessels in the sick eye.
This is what a recent study by the Washington University, published on the American Journal of Pathology, claims. The researchers treated with resveratrol some mice that showed an abnormal grow of the retinal blood vessels and observed a regression of the pathology.
By analyzing the cells that form the blood vessels it was possible to establish that the molecule acts on a previously unknown mechanism regulated by the protein eEF2.
According to the research principal investigator, Rajendra Apte, “this mechanism can be the target of new treatments, especially for some ageing degenerative diseases of the retina”.
