Still light wine also had a strong quarter, with volumes up 8% and value up 10%, a welcome boost for the wine industry where sales continue to be tough across the more established on- and off-trade channels.

The volume of total wine sold online increased 9% and sales value jumped 11% for the 13 weeks to 28 March 2015, according to the latest analysis from the Wilson Drinks Report (WDR).

Still light wine also had a strong quarter, with volumes up 8% and value up 10%, a welcome boost for the wine industry where sales continue to be tough across the more established on- and off-trade channels. It is notable that the shape of online sales is markedly different to sales through supermarkets.

Tim Wilson, managing director of WDR, commented: "The sparkling wine surge has continued into 2015, with total sparkling wine value up 16%. Not only have sales of Italian wine grown strongly, but we have also seen a massive jump in sales of other French sparkling wine other than Champagne. Both Champagne and cava, however, saw sales fall back -5% in Q1."
