Tourists wanting to visit any of Italy's top 40 sites of cultural interest will soon have the chance the dodge the ticket queues by buying their admission in advance on their mobile phones.
On July 1 it will be possible to download free a new application, the I-MiBAC - Top 40, to buy tickets for venues such as the Colosseum, Pompeii and Florence's Uffizi gallery with an iPhone, an iPad or an iPod Touch.
The Culture Ministry said new applications will follow this one shortly to open up the same service to anyone with a smartphone.
Tickets can be bought with the I-MiBAC - Top 40 up until 24 hours before the visit takes place.
So people who decide to go to a monument at the last minute will have to stand in line in the time-honoured fashion - an experience that can be long and exhausting, especially on a baking Italian summer day. The I-MiBAC - Top 40 will also enable people to access information, news, images, videos and maps related to the venues. It will be possible to download it from a series of Italian state websites, such as the Culture Ministry's (www.beniculturali.it), and from the AppStore.
