The pleasure of invisible. To heal from the evil of the world

The hope, the crisis of identity, the transmigration of people, the deterioration of the communication media and of society. Monsignor Ersilio Tonini, a master of our times. “We are condemned to follow ethics”

Monsignor Ersilio Tonini, priest, is a reference in Italy. His voice is among the most listened to. I had the chance and pleasure to meet him for the first time in 1992.I was in Bramante’s sacristy at Santa Maria delle Grazie, in Milan. I still remember the moment. Since then, his words enriched the conscience of many, opening them to the intangible. Tonini is still an undisputed master of our times. His thoughts are living meat, deserve not to remain dead letter.

Monsignor Tonini, the present time does not leave us untroubled. A fundamental question is still unanswered: can hope still survive?
What is happening nowadays is a set of undeciphered signs. We tend to abandon the cascade of images and words that stun us and pull our brain towards those who have interest in seducing us. Thus, the fundamental question is the same as usual: is there still room for hope?

Is there?
Some, no well many, say no. Even in the context of the secular trinity “liberty-equality-fraternity”, there is not hope anymore. But the question is always there. It comes from the secret cells of our being, and nowadays it acquires worldwide importance.

Even Christ’s Church is going through this crisis…
The Church was born as hope, hope coming from God, well grounded because it counts on a power that remains intact even when the mankind is powerless. Knowing this message, and feeling almost impotent to offer it is the sign of this crisis.

The man now is called to reflect on the human nature
Yes, the current situation leads to interrogate the man on his roots. Today we have to decide who we want to be, if the man wants still to be the purpose of creation and the interpret of universe.

Man’s place in the universe is changing
The transmigration of people will make people become a mix of people, races, and religion. A circumstance that, if not well prepared, risks being explosive.
Is a new vision of the world and humanity developing?
New generations are challenged, because the man has today the opportunity – once the DNA study will be completed – to eliminate illness forever, but also to create new human types. This is a huge challenge.

Media are undergoing epochal changes, too
Media need much money to compete, that are obtained through advertisement. This depends on audience. Therefore, if a superficial, inconsistent, program generates audience, it immediately becomes important. Media are facing a challenge today, too. In the future, and today already, the image and value of the man, is in play.

In the meanwhile, TV is corrupting souls
The TV is based on the will to impression, enlarge, and move, block or bend souls purely through distraction. TV can be deceptive and inhuman, a waste of time, a degradation of the person. But TV can also offer incredible opportunities. Anyway, the possibility of doing good TV relies on the richness of life of a society.

Do you envision any solution to tackle this degradation we are undergoing?
We have to take care of the youth, because it cannot avoid the fights of life. We need it to find pleasure in things that do not necessarily have a material purpose, that it consider gratuity as worthy. It is a matter of choosing the soul and the pleasure of discovering the interior world, the pleasure of the invisible, the discovery of the intangible. I say this, because as a child I was so lucky to have a mother who said “Son, get ready, be ready,…”. I was poor, but I did not envy anything that wealthy people had because, caring for my soul, I could give and taste more. Much more.
