My name is Silvana Cutrale and I was born in 1969 in Switzerland, but when I was six years old my family moved back to Sicily, in a small town called Buccheri which is located in the heart of Iblei Mountains, near Siracusa.
After high school I would have liked to continue my studies in the Faculty of Psychology at the University of Padua, but love changed my goals and I enrolled in a business course for accounting and administration.
At the age of 22, I got married and now have two beautiful children, an 18-year-old son and a 14-year-old daughter.
My “adventure” in farming began in 1987 when I met my husband, a producer of oil for three generations and ripening cheese. Over time, I joined him in his work, I learned to better understand his world which has fascinated me from the very beginning, so much so, that now it has become my world, where I can express my passion with great spontaneity and professionalism.
I am responsible for the sale of extra virgin olive oil; my objective has always been to focus on the uniqueness of agricultural production, olive growing, the main source of employment in my little town, in order to obtain the quality of a product typical of the area.
Today I am very satisfied of our achievements: our quality has been repeatedly recognized and rewarded in different competitions but above all, I could take my small town outside its geographical boundaries.
In 2004, together with my husband, we invested in the dairy industry ( www.mongibella.it) with the objective to focus on another product, which represents of our land – the manufacturing of cheese.
(On the Iblei highlands there are still many farmers who endure, notwithstanding the many difficulties they encounter, and the hard work involved in grazing the herd. Every day we collect their good milks and process it into fine cheese in which you can smell all the different scents of our land). Our passion in this field was recently recognized – we were awarded third prize in a national competition for our “Cosacavaddu Ibleo Fresco” a typical fresh cheese of our area. I enjoy and love participating in competitions, because, beyond the possibility of winning awards, it is an opportunity to introduce our products outside of our territory and to meet others involved in the same industry and exchange different ideas with them.
Our corporate philosophy is QUALITY, SERIOUSNESS and PROFESSIONALISM, but above all we protect our products that are 100% “Made in Italy”.
Why did you decide to make farming your business?
I chose to make farming my business when I met and fell in love with my husband in 1987, who was already in the business of growing olives and maturing and seasoning cheeses and I have always been at his side; However I believe , that if I had not loved my land, as much as I do and to which I have always felt connected, all this would not have been possible.
When I bring my products around to the world I am also promoting my territory because they are an expressions of the area where I live and work.
Do you feel more a peasant, a farmer or a business man?
I identify myself more of a business woman than a peasant or a farmer, because I have never worked the land with my hands. I take care of administrative and financial management of my company.
A definition of farming.
I have always thought of farming as “ Magic”
An adjective for defining the world of farming.
I would say that an adjective for the world of farming would be “Suffering”, because although farmer is productive, he has difficult to sell the product.
A keyword for the future of farming.
The future of farming should include More Culture to learn and know more and more. The farmer should not only dig the earth but he should also Learn and Know more Culture, he must be an entrepreneur of himself ; but should never lack the Love and Passion.
A model man.
For me the model man was Pope John Paul II
Someone to… go to the hell.
He Is not really a famous person and his name would be meaningless to others but I think he will go to hell on his own, without me sending him there!
