An old cellar back to ancient glories and the glories of the past thanks to a new generation linked to a brand , the 1883 that made it famous Conti Faina
In Umbria there is a winery that is , at the same time , the oldest and the youngest in the region. E ' in Collelungo , where since 2009 the family of the Counts Faina has taken to write the pages of the history of viticulture umbra. A tale interrupted dawn of the sixties, when the end of sharecropping lost force activity of an agricultural immense pride for the entire region in Italy. The project was revived in 2009, thanks to the impetus that Count Sebastiano Faina gave Angelica and daughter -in-law Stefano Sienese, capable today to join the concreteness agricultural wisely , courage and passion .
The earth is the same one that culminates in the Castle of Collelungo (XIII century ) , from where you dominate the hills of Monte Castello di Vibio and Todi , and Collazzone Collepepe and you can look down to Perugia , in the wonderful panorama of the middle valley of the Tiber. The castle is located in the medieval village of Collelungo , still inhabited , and home to the historic winery built in 1850 on the project that Senator Ceferino Faina shared with the Baron Bettino Ricasoli and reached great notoriety . The sites are those of the past, dug into the hillside in accordance with a wonderful architectural project that poses the cellar on three levels, allowing for the development of all phases of vinification by gravity , bridging activities hundreds of meters of tunnels dug into the rock destined still maturing of the wines .
In the nineteenth century Ceferino Faina was the first to introduce the specialized viticulture in Umbria. The old plant canopy were replaced with screws and a low density of more than 7000 vines per hectare , very advanced for its time. In the same places chosen by Ceferino Faina then there are today the vineyards of Agricola Faena , at an altitude between 400 and 530 meters above sea level, on medium -textured clay , with rocks , exposed to the northeast. There are plants with a density of 5000 vines per hectare. The training is the cordon and the varieties are Pinot Noir , Sangiovese , Merlot , Cabernet Sauvignon , Sauvignon Blanc , Chardonnay and Verdicchio , for a total of about 24 hectares.

So how was the French wine culture to lead the project of Ceferino Faina mid-nineteenth century , so today is Pinot Noir , a grape symbol side of the Alps , in the center of the new project . 1883 is an important year for the Cantina dei Conti Faina , is the year in which the master coopers Papiano built the large wooden barrel from 263 hectoliters and that " 1883 ", which stands at the center of the large wooden barrel within the cellar , gave the name to the company Pinot Noir . The 2011 vintage of Pinot Noir " 1883 " is red ruby color with light purple hues, the nose the aromas reminiscent of the red fruit , blackberry, cherry, spice with hints of vanilla. The palate is elegant with good acidity , well structured and with a long finish . A table is ideal with pasta dishes , medium-aged cheeses , white meats and roasts.
