At its meeting on 27 May the IOC has faced since been pending since last November. Overcome the pitfalls of the most critical: waxes, campesterol, and alkyl esters
After that in November 2012, the meeting of Coi had closed with a stalemate, even with the failure to approve the budget estimate for 2013, which led to the freezing of all assets of the Board up to date, it has found the square of the circle and was given the green light to new activities.
Favorable opinion has been expressed both for the accession of Uruguay and of Palestine even though the final decision will be taken until November this year.
The most significant news for growers Europeans, because they will be implemented soon by the European Union, are a revision of the limits for some of the main parameters of concern to virgin oils.
In the wake of the gradual improvement of quality of production, some limitations have been revised, but some expanded through decision trees that guarantee the authenticity of the product.
The IOC has planned the transition from the determination of alkyl esters (methyl ethyl esters +) to consider only the ethyl esters, with, however, a significant and progressive reduction of their maximum level. From the current 75 mg / kg for the alkyl esters from the countryside the 2013/14, or the next, the limit will be revised to 40 mg / kg of ethyl esters that will subside further to 35 mg / kg in 2014/15.
Also lowered the limit of stigmastidieni, from 01 mg / kg to 0.05 mg / kg.
Also lowered the lmiite of myristic acid from 0.05% to 0.03%.
The limit set of waxes to 150 mg / kg for the sum of C42, C44 and C46.
Resolve such a delicate theme of campesterol which has long been seen as opposed new world olive and Europe. They were in fact adopted decision trees. For extra virgin olive oils that have campesterol values between 4 and 4.5%, authenticity is declared only when at the same time respect the values of 1.4% and 0.3% of stigmasterol Delta 7 stigmastenol.
Finally it was finally adopted the general method for determining the foreign oils, the method for the determination of sterols and triterpene dialcohols and provisionally the method for the determination of alkyl esters and waxes with 3 grams of silica.
It also adopted a new revision of the method for the organoleptic assessment of virgin olive oils.
