The main characteristic of the Italian agriculture is to be variegated, i.e. it shows a great diversity both in terms of products and of industrial structure.
Biodiversity is a choice that perfectly interprets that long history of agriculture in our country. The genetic heritage of our flora and fauna, preserved and transferred among generations, is nowadays the great economic chance of our food industry.
The network of local knowhow that is still working in many rural contexts is the strategic link between past and modernity, innovation and future. The farmers are the pivotal workers of this system, which aims at the preservation and at the improvement of biodiversity. They work for an ecologically, socially and economically sustainable farming.
By defending biodiversity we refuse the monoculture farming models. The scientific research based on the traditional knowhow is the pivotal step for developing new technologies. Hence, preservation of biodiversity means the high qualification of agriculture and the centrality of the role and function of farmers and not the refuse of modernity.
As a matter of fact, the diversity of products, landscapes and cultural identities are all ingredients of a same project, which is based on a balanced relationship between men and nature. This is particularly true for the preserved area and for organic farming. The rediscovery of old cultivars and their diffusion through modern systems already represented in many local contexts the most concrete way to overcome the food market crisis.
Then, the culture and the preservation of biodiversity have positive effects also on the marketing and on the relationship between producers and customers. The consumers that look at ecosustainable farms and that value biodiversity are models of an aware consume.
