The OIV at the Sélections Mondiales des Vins Canada

The President of the OIV, Claudia Quini, and Director General Jean-Marie Aurand took part in the 21st year of the international competition "Les Sélections Mondiales des Vins Canada", held in Quebec from  31 May to 3 June, 2014.

This competition, placed under the patronage of the OIV, collected 1,725 wine samples from 35 countries.

Canada has over 500 kha of vineyards and produces around 500 khl of wine each year, mainly in the provinces of Ontario, British Columbia, Quebec and Nova Scotia. It is an important import market, importing 3.8 mhl of wine every year.

The wine and alcoholic beverage industry is strictly regulated by state-owned companies (which have a monopoly on imports), present in almost all provinces.

During this visit, Jean-Marie Aurand met with the President of the Société des alcools du Québec (SAQ) and the Director of Sustainable Development.

The Director General of the OIV presented the OIV's work and stressed the importance of strengthening cooperation between the Organisation and Quebec – which was an OIV observer from 1983 to 2005 – and more generally with Canada. Issues related to sustainable development are part of SAQ’s action plan and, in general, all the new challenges facing the viticultural sector (climate change, wine and health problems, the impact of innovations, social and societal concerns) are receiving particular interest from Quebec authorities and may enable the development of areas of fruitful cooperation.

This dialogue will be continued with an eye to making the collaboration a reality.
