Italy stop to neonicotinoids

The Minister of agriculture food and forestry policies, opening the XXIth edition of SANA, officially announced the decision to keep in force until 2010 the decree that suspended the use of neonicotinoids for maize tannery, since there seems to be a correlation between the use of those active principles and the bees’s death and the depopulation of the bee hives.

" I confirm that the decree for the suspension of the neonicotinoids for maize tannery will be confirmed also for the next farming year. The numbers are clear: this year, after the suspension, there have been only two cases bees’ death, against the 185 of last year. We cannot ignore this data nor can we abandon our 75 thousand bee-keepers and the more than one million bee hives that we have in Italy".

With these words the Minister of agriculture food and forestry policies Luca Zaia, opening the XXIth edition of SANA, officially announced the decision to keep in force until 2010 the decree that suspended the use of neonicotinoids for maize tannery, since there seems to be a correlation between the use of those active principles and the bees’s death and the depopulation of the bee hives.

"Obviously, the Minister said, will have to find a common road with the chemical-drug industries in order to find alternative products and practices that have less environmental impact but are equally effective. This period can be used by the sower builders to design machines that can highly reduces the effects of the dispersion of powders and by the drug companies to think about tanning methods at zero impact".

"We do not want to penalize anybody" , Zaia continued "It is a prudential suspension of judgment in order to conciliate all the productive sectors and to find a definitive and common solution that safeguards the bees, fundamental for the survival of our agriculture, and that at the same time answers the needs of such an important sector like the maize one".

Speaking about the organic sector the Minister said: "We want to promote as much as possible and ensure that Italian organic products are known, that is the largest in Europe and that has a prominent role at a world level. It is a sector that is growing, that answers the quality and safety requests made by consumers. The organic philosophy is in full alignment with that local and seasonal agriculture that we want".

"The agricultural issue and the one on food safety, Zaia concluded, is at the centre of the Government’s agenda. And in the budget there are the necessary resources for the entire sector".
