Italy: no to Europe GM's decision

We will not allow a similar measure, decided only by the top floors, to affect our agriculture. For this reason we are evaluating the possibility of promoting a common front of all the Countries wishing to join us in protecting the citizen’s health and the European farming identities. With these words the Minister of Agricultural Food and Forestry Policies commented the decision taken by the European Commission to authorize the production of the Genetically Modified Amflora potato.

“We are against the decision adopted today by the European Commission that grants the permission to cultivate a genetically modified potato. Breaking a cautionary tradition, existing since 1998, is an act that threatens to fundamentally alter the primary sector in Europe.”
With these words the Minister of Agricultural Food and Forestry Policies Luca Zaia commented the decision taken by the European Commission to authorize the production of the Genetically Modified Amflora potato.

"Not only do we not recognize ourselves in this decision - the Minister added - but we want to underline that we will not allow it to question the sovereignty of Member States regarding this issue. On our part, we will continue working on our policies, which are focused on the defence and preservation of traditional agriculture and the health of citizens. We will not allow a similar measure, decided only by the top floors, to affect our agriculture. For this reason we are evaluating the possibility of promoting a common front of all the Countries wishing to join us in protecting the citizen’s health and the European farming identities”.
