Record numbers for Vinitaly international wine competition

The juries began work today, 2 April, to select among 3,646 wines by more than 1,000 companies from 27 countries the winners of the 18th International Wine Competition. Compared to the 2009 edition, one hundred more samples were entered for assessment by the 21 juries made up of authoritative oenologists and journalists in the sector from all over the world, for a total of 105 experts. Such record participation confirms the growing prestige of the most selective international award, since only 3% of wines receive medals, becoming the showcase for excellence among the best production in the world.
The Competition was presented today by Ettore Riello, President of VeronaFiere, Giovanni Mantovani, Director General of VeronaFiere, Federico Castellucci, Director General of Oiv - Organisation Internationale de la Vigne et du Vin, and Serge Dubois, Secretary General of the Union Internationale des Oenologues.
As of this year, the Special “Vinitaly Nation 2010” and “Gran Vinitaly 2010” Awards are joined by the new Special “Vinitaly Region 2010” Award, made to the producer in every Italian region achieving the best result bases on the sum of the highest scores for the three best wines achieving the “Special Mention” diploma.
The added value of the competition lies in the programme of targeted, world-wide marketing initiatives involved during the year through the Vinitaly World Tour. These include, thanks to the agreement between VeronaFiere and Isetan, the exclusive chain store with 11 sales points between Tokyo and Kyoto, the possibility for companies winning the "Grand Gold Medal", "Gold Medal", "Silver Medal" and "Bronze Medal" to present their wines in specific promotion corners. First held in 2007, this commercial opportunity last year saw sales of Italian wines boom during the promotion week by of more 100% compared to the previous year.
To valorise this important acknowledgement of attained quality in marketing plans, as of this edition of the competition producers may ask VeronaFiere authorisation to print and apply a corresponding number of labels stamps with the distinction "International Wine Competition 2010" to batches of award-winning wines.
Within the scope of the International Wine Competition, the Banca Popolare di Verona Award is assigned to valorise the company from the Veneto, Emilia-Romagna, Friuli Venezia Giulia or Trentino-Alto Adige ranking top on the basis of overall scores.
The International Wine Competition it is organised in collaboration with Assoenologi, Ice and ASI - Association de la Sommellerie International and is held with the patronage of the Ministry for Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies, the Ministry of Economic Development, Oiv and Union Internationale des Oenologues. The Management Committee is chaired by the President of VeronaFiere and comprises seven members appointed, respectively, by: Oiv; Union Internationale des Oenologues; Ministry for Agricultural Policies; Ministry of Economic Development; International "Sommeliers" Association; Ice and Assoenologi.
