Langhe e Monferrato as Unesco heritage

In the year when Italy celebrates the 150 years of unity, the heart of the cultural landscape of Piedmont becomes a candidate of the Unesco World Heritage

The Interministerial Unesco Work Group, composed by representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of the Environment, gave the final go-ahead to the candidacy of "Wine landscapes of Piedmont: Langhe, Roero and Monferrato", in the List of World Heritage sites. It is the Italian candidate for 2011, a sign of how much the enhancement of rural landscapes is important for this government. "As I already stated during the registration in the list of the rural landscapes of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, the valorisation of traditional wine landscapes is a priority of my Ministry". With these words, the Ministry of Agriculture Food and Forestry Policies Giancarlo Galan commented the decision of the UNESCO Working Group. "There is still a lot of work to do and the inscription on the List will only take place after the judging bodies and assessors have given their vote in he Intergovernmental Committee, but I'm sure we are working in the right direction. Precisely for this reason, the Minister continued, I want to thank those in my Department who have worked with dedication and commitment to the achievement of this first important result. The wine landscape of the Langhe-Roero and Monferrato is a part of the ancient Italian culinary history and is one of the "diamond" of the rural Italian heritage. I can definitely say that my Ministry is working hard to ensure that this very rich Italian heritage receives the right recognition both in Italy and in the international context". "From this point of view, the Minister continued, the Unesco recognition would, no doubt put a stamp of excellence on rural landscape that is unique".
The application will be officially presented in Paris the 30 January 2011.
