Open olive mills in Italy

Can tradition and technology go hand in hand? The answer is “Frantoi aperti” (“Open mills”), the event that will be held in mills and medieval towns of Umbria from the 29th to the 11th of December 2011. It invites to vote the Pdo Extra virgin olive oil of Umbria via social network. The prize is a weekend to pass tasting the new oil and learning about the other excellences of the Region . The contest, organised by the Strada Olio Pdo Umbria and the mountain community of Monti Martani, Serano and Subasio, wishes to involve the main Italian foodbloggers. After having sent them a small tasting of the excellent Umbrian oil they must try to create a recipe that will be published in the Strada Olio Pdo Umbria blog, where the voting will be held. Those who will get the biggest number of total votes (achieved by adding “like” on Facebook to “tweet” of Twitter) will win one weekend in Umbria, in one of the buildings belonging to the Le Dimore of Umbria Pdo (belonging to the Association Strada Olio Pdo Umbria).

A special award, five liters of extra virgin Pdo Umbria olive oil is foreseen for those who will get the biggest number of votes from Twitter. The initiative is inserted in a range of activities, carried out by the Association, aimed at creating a direct relation with a public, listening and stimulating the conversation through social media. From the 29th of October the application Frantoi Aperti in Umbria will be available of the Apple Store for iPhone and iPad. It guides directly to mills, thus helping the supply chain. At ones disposal there will be a detailed map of the localities to visit and of the mills hidden in the local hills: it is a guide to find the right road, the one of tradition and the warmth of the family, in order to enjoy one’s own time and rythms.
