Italy fishing halt: to defend our seas


The Minister of agricultural food and forestry policies comments the decree that stabilizes the modality of entering in force of the “biological halt” for 2012 that was sent for publication in the Official Gazette.

“The protection of sea resources is fundamental thus the measure of temporary halt for the fishing season 2012 is very important. The halt, is a decisive tool for the conservation of the sea stocks, even in future years, and with the agreement reached in the last weeks in the Eu Council on the Common fishery policy we have also thrown the bases to ensure that this measure is maintained in the future.
This declared the Minister of agricultural food and forestry policies, Mario Catania, commenting the decree that stabilizes the modality of entering in force of the “biological halt” for 2012 that was sent for publication in the Official Gazette.

According to the decree:
- For fishing vessels authorised to exercise fishing activity with the trawl and-or mid-water floating trawl system, registered in the marine districts from Trieste to Rimini, there is a temporary halt of the fishing activity for forty-three days from the 16th of July to the 27th of August of the current year.
- For fishing vessels authorised to exercise the fishing activity with the trawl and/or mid-water floating trawl systems, registered in the marine districts from Pesaro to Bari there is a temporary halt of the fishing activity for forty-three days from the 6th August to the 17th of September of the current year.
- For fishing vessels authorised to exercise the fishing activity with the trawl and/or mid-water floating trawl systems signed in the marine districts from Brindisi to Imperia there is a temporary halt of the fishing activity for thirty days from the 3rd of September to the 2nd of October of the current year.
-For fishing vessels authorised to exercise the fishing activity with the trawl and/or mid-water floating trawl systems, registered in the marine districts of the Sardegna region and Sicily region, there is a temporary halt of the fishing activity for thirty days, in the respect of the periods decided upon in the preliminary management plans, the effective date is decided upon by the regional measure.
Moreover, the measures of the so called “after halt period” have been intensified in order to reinforce protection of the Adriatic sea resources. In detail it was decided that once the halt period has ended, the fishing activity for 10 weeks is allowed only for three days a week, then only for 4 days a week. It has also been decided that from the moment the measure has been published till the 31st of October 2012 the trawl and/or mid-water floating trawl fishing, within a distance inferior the 6 miles from the coast and with the water depth lower than 60 metres, is prohibited in the Adriatic marine areas, the exception is for Monfalcone and Trieste and the Ionian sea.
As for the modality of the aid distribution, it has been decided that with a following ministerial decree the criteria and modality of the aid distribution for the fishery enterprises that carry out the temporary halt, will be determined.
