Increasing demand for locally manufactured paper

The Australian Plantation Products and Paper Industry Council will receive funding from the Rudd Government to develop marketing tools to help consumers judge the environmental performance of Australian forestry and wood products.

Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Tony Burke announced up to $50,000 to help forestry and paper manufacturers provide better information to consumers on the environmental impact of these products, increasing the market for a major local primary resource.

“The forestry and wood products industries contribute significantly to the Australian economy,” Mr Burke said.

“The forestry and wood products industry underpins an estimated 120,000 in regional Australia.

“Our forestry management practices seek to balance economic, social and environmental, biodiversity and heritage outcomes, they are world’s best practice for sustainable forest management.”

The total value of turnover in wood and paper products industries in 2007-08 was about $23 billion, representing 5.8 per cent of the total value of Australian manufacturing production.

The value of forest product exports in 2008-09 was $2.3 billion.

The project is one of 14 to share in nearly $1.3 million from the Rudd Government to help promote Australia’s food and forest industries to domestic and export markets.

It is the second round of funding under the three-year Promoting Australian Produce initiative – a key election commitment for rural and regional industries.
